If you attend the traditional Mass at different times, you may notice that it is celebrated with varying degrees of solemnity — sometimes quiet and intimate, sometimes filled with chant and ceremony. These are not different Masses but different forms of the same Mass, each beautiful in its own way.
Low Mass (Missa lecta)
The Low Mass is the simplest form. The priest, assisted by one or more servers, says the prayers in a quiet voice, without singing. There is a particular peace to the Low Mass: a stillness that invites deep, personal prayer. Many of the faithful especially treasure the early-morning Low Mass, when the church is quiet and the soul can rest in adoration. Much of the Mass is prayed in silence, drawing the heart inward to the Lord.
High Mass or Sung Mass (Missa cantata)
In a High Mass — also called a Sung Mass — the priest sings the principal prayers, and a choir or the congregation sings the responses and the chants of the day. Gregorian chant fills the church, and incense is often used. The Sung Mass lifts the senses and the soul together, clothing the sacred action in beauty fitting for the worship of God.
Solemn Mass (Missa solemnis)
The Solemn Mass is the fullest and most ancient form. Here the priest is assisted by a deacon and subdeacon, along with servers, and the ceremonies unfold in their complete splendor — chant, incense, and the careful choreography of sacred ministers all directed to the glory of God. A Solemn Pontifical Mass is a Solemn Mass offered by a bishop, with additional ceremonies proper to his office; our community is blessed to receive such a Mass from time to time.
One Sacrifice, many splendors
It is worth repeating: whether quiet or sung, simple or solemn, it is the same Holy Sacrifice of the Mass — the same Christ, the same offering, the same grace. The Low Mass is in no way “lesser”; many saints loved it dearly. The forms simply allow the Church to clothe the great mystery in greater or lesser solemnity according to the day and the occasion.
A gentle suggestion for newcomers: if you are able, experience both a quiet Low Mass and a Sung or Solemn Mass. Each will teach your heart something the other cannot. Watch the events page for the special Solemn Masses offered in our region.
